Scoring High in an Economics Exam

Hello students,

This answer guide is focused on helping students (Especially GCE, IGCSE & Edexcel O levels and A levels) with attempting the subjective/ structured exam of Economics. Many students end up performing bad in the structured exam despite having full economic knowledge because they either lack the writing skills or are not aware of how to go about attempting a question.

This answer guide will help students in realizing and avoiding common mistakes and score high by taking care of small aspects.

Before you move towards the guide, here are a few things you should remember.

Read the question very carefully

Identify what is exactly being asked. This will help you remain to the point and clear in your answer and will keep you from deviating towards irrelevant details. Remember, the examiner will have a lot of copies to check and you would not want to annoy the examiner by writing long unnecessary stories.

Focus on the Command Words

Command words such as Explain, Define, Discuss, How etc. directs you about what the examiner is exactly looking for. Focusing on and knowing about the command words will always help you answering in the manner the examiner expects you to answer a question. You can find a list of Command Words in the answer guide.

Brainstorm, Brainstorm, Brainstorm!

This is very important for essay questions. Once you have read the question, identified command words and what is being asked, roughly jot down a few bullet points (using a pencil) that you would want to include in your answer and arrange your points in a logical order. This little extra effort takes hardly five minutes but will not only ensure that your answer covers all important points, but will also make sure that your answer is in a clear, crisp order with a smooth transition from one point to another.

One Idea per Paragraph

Whenever you introduce a new idea, point or an argument, make sure it starts with a new paragraph. With in a paragraph, every idea, point or an argument must be elaborated and backed by logical reasoning and illustrated with examples and diagrams where possible. Do NOT make a statement which you cannot back by a reason or an example.

Keep Your Tone Impersonal

Avoid using words such as ‘I’ or ‘we’ and stick to an impersonal and generic tone. You may, however, use such words if your opinion or evaluation is asked for.

Okay! so these are some general tips that you should always, always remember. For more answer specific guidelines, click on the hyperlink below. If clicking does not work, right click and use the ‘open in new tab’ option.
